What is Yantra?

Different mantras have been formulated by our sages for different deities. Regular chanting of these mantras in specified way helps one attract energy related to the deity that is being worshipped, chanted or meditated. Yantras are as old in Tantric tradition as the mantras. Yantras are basically, the geometrical representation of the power of mantra. In layman language, Yantra is artistic manifestation of Mantra that is visible to our eyes, similar to any painting of the artist.  In Tantric tradition, worship of deity with both Yantra and Mantra is regarded most effective.

Nowadays, it is common to see Yantra of different deity in almost all puja ghar of Hindus in India. It is equally popular in Islam and Buddhism. Yantra of different deities (Durga, Shiva, Kuber) have different geometrical shapes. Yantra are found in various forms such as Pendent, Bracelet, Pocket Yantra (suitable to carry in pocket like credit card), Desktop Yantra (suitable to keep in office, in front of desk), Framed Yantra (suitable to hang on wall and worship in puja ghar). Yantras are crafted in different sattvik metals such as Copper, Brass, Silver, Gold, Panchadhatu, Ashtadhatu etc and also on bhojpatra. Some Yantra are also carved in 3D form (meru Yantra), but one must give a second thought before buying those yantras for puja purpose. It is very difficult to get 3D Yantra in exact geometrical shape and puja of Yantra only gives best result if it is drawn per geometry described in our tantra Shashtra.

What are the factors determining rate of Yantra?

The answer of this question may seem very confusing, especially if you visit ecommerce websites for Yantras online. You will see same Yantra has different rate on different website. Surprisingly this rate can vary from few hundreds to few thousands. In this article I will try to answer this question - what determines rate of the Yantra.

If I were to name a single factor that determines rate of Yantra then I would definitely name is as accuracy of Yantra. It is very difficult to say if the Yantra that you have purchased have the same geometry (same angle, same shapes) as mentioned in related Tantra Shashtra. Most of the 3D yantras found in market fail to meet the precise geometry of Yantra. Apart from accuracy, below are the factors that determine the price of Yantra.

·         Size: - Size of Yantra is directly proportional to its price. Typical Yantra used for puja purpose have the size of  (sizes are in inches)
o   3’ X 3’
o   6  X 6’
o   12’ X 12’
These are the sizes which are accepted for puja purpose. Other sizes of Yantra available in market (such as 7’X7’, 3.25’X3.25’ etc) are not considered pure for puja purpose

·         Form: - Majority of Yantras seen on internet are just the metal sheet with image of Yantra on it. Cost of these sheets are lesser compared to framed Yantra (Yantra in beautiful frame). Difference of their cost can be anywhere between 100-200. Even there is difference in material used as sheet for Yantra. Some are drawn in gold plated paper while some in gold plated metal. Gold plated metal may not look as beautiful as gold plated Paper but it is costlier and durable. Cost of Locket Yantra is very much specific to the engraving on it. More beautiful the engraving costlier the Yantra. Normally, locket yantras are expensive than 6’X6’ yantras

·         Metal:- Yantra can have different base metal. The common metals used for engraving of Yantras are Gold, Silver, Copper, Bronze (copper+zinc), Panchadhatu, Ashtadhatu. These different metals Yantra have different prices.

·         Energizing cost:- Yantra in itself is not more than a piece of metal unless energized. Much website charge for energizing of Yantra. But it is very important to know how many mantras they have been chanted during energizing of Yantra. Higher the count of mantra, higher will be the energy in Yantra. A genuine pundit will charge you anywhere in range of 500-2000 for energizing of normal Yantra. The cost may go up depending upon intensity of mantra chanting and the type of Yantra.

What is Shree / Shri / Sri Yantra?

Shree Yantra is a holy geometrical depiction of feminine divinity, Shakti. Geometry of Shri Chakra (Shri Yantra) and its importance has been explained in detail in Yogini Hridaya, second part of the Vamakeshvara Tantra. It also describes the nature of Shakti and origin of Universe. Four upward pointing triangle represents masculine divinity Shiva and five downward pointed triangle represents feminine divinity Shakti.  Combination of these four upward pointed and five downward pointed triangle in Shri Yantra is perfect demonstration of fusion of Shiva and Shakti which creates universe and life.

Contrary to the common believe that Shri Yantra represents goddess Laxmi, The truth is Shree Yantra represents all feminine divinity and of course goddess Laxmi is one of them.  In southern part of India it is common to see Shree Chakra in many temples and in almost every household. It is equally popular in Northern India where people worship Shree Yantra for better fortune and luck. In Tantra Shashtra, it is believed that worshipping of Shakti with devi mantra along with this Yantra gives speedy result. Though there are different Yantra for different form of Shakti (Kali, Durga, Laxmi), but worshipping Shri Yantra gives balanced effect of worshipping all these form of Shakti.
